From the Manufacturer
-
The Thermometer
- : Uses a bimetallic strip coiled into a spring, with one end fixed to the housing and the other moving the indicating needle.
- Principle of Operation: The two different metals expand at different rates when heated. The bonding of these metals causes the coil to bend, which moves the needle to indicate temperature.
- Accuracy: Bimetallic thermometers are less accurate than bulb thermometers (mercury or alcohol-based), but are sufficient for general use.
- Calibration: Requires no calibration, making it easy and convenient for everyday temperature measurements.
-
The Hygrometer
- : The hygrometer measures the relative humidity inside by using a sensitive mechanical coil spring bonded with a moisture-absorbent material.
- Humidity Detection: It registers the percentage of water vapor in the air, comparing it to the maximum moisture that can be held at a given temperature.
- Slow Response: Coils in hygrometers respond gradually, meaning it may take an hour or more for the device to stabilize and provide an accurate reading after sudden humidity changes.
- Indoor vs Outdoor Humidity: The hygrometer measures indoor humidity, which differs significantly from outdoor humidity levels, such as those reported by the National Weather Service.
-
The Barometer
- : Uses a flexible metal box known as an aneroid cell, which is made from an alloy of beryllium and copper.
- Evacuated Capsule: The capsule is evacuated to create a vacuum inside and is supported by a strong spring to prevent collapse.
- Air Pressure Sensitivity: Changes in external air pressure cause the capsule to expand or contract, driving mechanical levers to amplify these movements.
- Measurement Display: The amplified movements of the capsule are displayed on the face of the barometer, giving a readable air pressure measurement.
- Manual Needle Adjustment: Many models include a manually adjustable needle to mark the current reading, making it easier to track changes in pressure.
- Invention: The aneroid barometer was invented by Blaise Pascal.
