DESCRIPTION

OVERVIEW

The Davis 6540 WeatherLink for APRS with streaming data logger is designed for use by amateur radio operators, including storm chasers and volunteer weather watchers. Connects a Vantage Pro2 or Vantage Vue (or Davis Instruments 6316 Weather Envoy) to a ham radio with TNC modem for instant transmission of both your location and the local weather conditions via APRS.

As with all WeatherLink products, WeatherLink for APRS includes the following features:

  • Transfer data to your PC whenever you like or at a predefined storage interval of 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60, or 120 minutes. Data logger can store up to six months' worth of data, depending on the chosen storage interval.
  • See current conditions at a glance on the instant weather bulletin, perform detailed analysis, or graph data on a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. Data can be exported to most popular spreadsheet, database, and word processing programs.
  • Create your own weather web site or post weather conditions to a LAN. Use the included HTML templates or design your own. Add graphs, text, lines, or scrolling ticker tapes, and upload other files (such as images from a webcam) along with your weather data. Requires Internet Explorer 4 or above for weather web site features.
  • Expanded reporting includes heating degree days, cooling degree days, and fuel-on-demand. Evapotranspiration, leaf wetness, soil moisture, soil temperature, sunburn risk for different skin types, and solar energy are all available with the use of optional sensors.
  • Share your weather data by participating in the Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP) and the GLOBE Program.
  • Create weather watcher reports in NOAA National Climatic Data Center format.

Computer Requirements:

  • Includes software on a CD-Rom disk and data logger with 8 foot (2.4m) cable.
  • Windows serial version requires a computer running Windows 95 or later with at least 5MB free hard disk space, and 4MB RAM.

4 stars Davis WeatherLink for APRS w/ Streaming Data Logger (6540)

I purchased the WeatherLink for APRS to use with a TinyTrak4 TNC. (I chose a TT4 because I already know how to program it, not because I prefer one brand of TNC over another.) I've set up several other APRS Wx stations and I learned that these installations are never really intuitive. The WeatherLink for APRS was easier to set up that I expected. The Davis programming software and set-up utility are very easy to install and run. The WeatherLink had no problem communicating with my USB-to-Serial adapter! The WeatherLink programming baud rate is set using the "StreamingDataUtility" and does not need to be the same as the weather data baud rate. The "Auto Detect" is a nice feature. Set the TT4 to "DEAFTEXT" and set the TT4 weather reporting period (WPERIOD) to zero, the weather station will tell the TNC when to transmit. Do not use a null modem cable when connecting the WeatherLink to either the PC or the TNC. The first weather data transmission may not be recognized by the APRS system or it may be listed on the "raw" packet screen as "Unsupported Packet Format", be patient, it will probably be ok on the 2nd or 3rd transmission.

The APRS accessory was easy to install - literally plug, that's it. The software was easy enough to set up. I had the interface and radio working in 1 hr. It's nice to get the weather on my ham radio now. It also comes with some software to connect to NOAA via your computer and the Internet, All in all pretty easy to set up.
